17 times Grand Slam winner Roger Federer has ruled himself out of the ongoing Madrid open today after the 34 year old failed to recover from a back injury which he sustained during a training session last Saturday.

After getting a bye in the first round of this particular competition, Federer was considered as one of the hot favorites to win the Madrid open. But when Federer has struggled with back problems in the past, this injury has once again came to haunt him as the Swiss Star will not feature in the remaining rounds of the Madrid Open.

Famous from his injury free career thus far, it has been a difficult year to cope with as far as Roger Federer is concerned. When he underwent the first surgery of his career earlier this year which forced him out of action for 2 months, it was then a stomach problem which stopped him from participating in the Miami Open back in March.

And when he did make his return from injury in the Monte-Carlo Masters in April, a quarter final appearance was all he could manage after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga got the better of him in the last 8.

However, there is still some good news for Federer fan base as his current injury is not as serious as it was feared initially.

Confirmed by Federer himself, the 34 year old could return to action as early as next week as he looks to get some game time before the commencement of French Open from May the 22nd. Talking to the Press, this is what Federer has had to say about his recent injury scare,

‘’This is normal back things I’ve had in the past, which I guess is good, because I know how to handle it. I know how long it can take’’.
