According to the latest projections that are coming out from various media outlets about the UK Elections, London looks all set to elect its first ever Muslim Mayor in the form of Pakistani Sadiq Khan.

After casting their votes throughout Thursday, the Londoners now wait for the outcome of the elections which will be unveiled on Friday afternoon.

While Sadiq is likely to be elected as the next Mayor of London – giving a much needed boast to his Party, there aren’t much good news waiting for his Labour Party outside their London stronghold.

Looking at his election campaign and Sadiq concentrated his efforts to convince his electorate that he is a modern Muslim. His opponent Zac Goldsmith was having none of it as he branded the 45-year-old Muslim as radical and dangerous.

Moreover, Zac Goldsmith also accused his opponent of providing oxygen, cover, and platform to Islamic Extremists. In addition to Mr Goldsmith, the likes of Prime Minister David Cameron and many other conservatives also shared this opinion about the Labour Candidate.

However, as suggested by the results coming out through various media outlets, Sadiq Khan has been able to shun all those remarks. In retrospect to the remarks of Goldsmith, Mr Khan also accused his opponent of dividing voters.

Being a mid-term election, many would have hoped earlier for Labour to cultivate additional seats. However, thanks to the controversies surrounding Jeremy Corbyn and former London Mayor Livingstone – in which he claimed that Zionism was supported by Hitler, Labour Party was virtually ousted from the elections on a nationwide scale even before a vote was cast.

In addition, a Labour lawmaker Naz shah was suspended last month after she posted derogatory remarks about Israel on her Social Media account.

Thus, while the election of first Muslim Mayor in the history of London is a monumental thing – both for the Muslims and the Labour Party, it won’t soothe the nerves of the Labour faithful which is living in the countryside.
